They were planning on around £6k for units and appliances plus fitting............I don't call that REALLY cheap - it's not a massive kitchen.

It was probably the wet dream of a webdesigner, with lots of features and pop-ups and hexagonal inserts (don't ask...!) I hate that they do the whole 'this price will be held for 24hrs' routine (ugh! The stress must have been terrible. :)) I sold a few more things, but they were commissioned, so they don't appear on the site.
We have had two very pleasant and extensive design appointments with a non-pushy salesman / designer who has been happy to go along with us completely changing the location and design of our kitchen such that we are now happy with what we want. I paid 3.5K for kitchen and paid my carpenter 3.5K for fitting.

Sounds a very high quote, we had one of their mid-top level range (without the fancy worktop) and they chucked in a £2.5k range for <£7k with a similar number of units. So I told him to keep it simple, sat down with him for a few hours and hurray!!
We're looking at one of the Linda Barker kitchens, and we know the colour, handles, worktops, etc. - I think he's done a great job. We had a quote from Wren (the also didn't really give me what I wanted) and then they hounded me on the phone for months to buy from them. Of course you can fill the room with cabinets for that money but it looks like you want several features that cost more to produce.
