When the dialogue isn’t flat and mechanical, it veers into risible noir-speak. Fauna, as it turned out, was the granddaughter of George Hodel, a Los Angeles gynecologist whose sinister disposition and alleged sex crimes made him a prime suspect in Short’s murder. There’s no mystery surrounding how “I Am the Night,” TNT’s new truthy-crime mini-series, came to be. Limited series, 60 mins. Finding a new way into an old story is a framework to which television is uniquely suited, but it’s also trickier than it may seem. It had a sensational kicker: When she learned the truth about her biological parents, she also learned that one of her grandfathers was George Hodel, a prime suspect in the infamously gruesome and unsolved So the story had two currently hot hooks: struggles with race and identity, on one hand, and a lurid real-life murder mystery, on the other.

Parents need to know that I Am the Night is a suspense drama about a young light-skinned black woman raised during segregation.Starring Chris Pine and India Eisley, the story begins in post-segregation Nevada, when Fauna Hodel discovers she is adopted and decides to search for her birth parents.
It’s hard to argue the merits of a slick thriller starring a talent such as Pine, even when it gets carried away. Sometimes, after all, getting carried away by a magnetic mystery is exactly the point. There’s no mystery surrounding how “I Am the Night,” TNT’s new truthy-crime mini-series, came to be.
(Another thing to keep in mind is that Jenkins was close to the real Fauna Hodel before her death in 2017, and Hodel’s daughters are co-hosting TNT’s companion podcast to the series. After leaving Jimmy Lee (Golden Brooks), her increasingly resentful mother figure, Fauna sets out to find the truth, which is much more slippery and disturbing than she could have ever imagined.
That’s partly because of Eisley’s performance — she shuffles a small deck of expressions and emotions — and partly because the scenes involving her embittered but protective mother (Golden Brooks) and her other African-American relatives are pretty perfunctory. Jay’s two notes are cocaine-fueled post-traumatic anger — he saw combat at Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War — and stoic nobility, alternating until the story doesn’t need him anymore and he fades away. )Eisley probably gets more screen time than Pine, but Fauna feels like a secondary character even as the story is channeled through her. There is a dandy story at the heart of “I am the Night,” a new limited series that premiered Monday night: the notorious Black Dahlia mystery.
