Background research involved the examination of paintings, photographs and films, and the study of archives. For Wright, casting became a lengthy process, particularly choosing the right actors for his protagonists. But by the end of the book, the story is flipped and the reader is left to ponder over what the story is actually about. Its opening scenes in an English country house between the wars are like a dream of elegance, and then a 13-year-old girl sees something she misunderstands, tells a lie and destroys all possibility of happiness in three lives, including her own. We learn that the book—yup, Atonement—is her novel, and that she is waiting to publish it until Lord and Lady Marshall—Paul and Lola—are dead and cannot sue. A stint in the army is not where his life was headed, which took a radical turn four years earlier at the Tallis estate where he grew up as his mother worked as the Tallis' live-in housekeeper. Her cousins, 15-year-old Lola Quincey and 9-year-old twins Jackson and Pierrot Quincey, are coming to stay with the Tallises because their parents are embroiled in a divorce. In 1935 England, 13-year-old Briony Tallis is from a wealthy family set to perform a play she has written for an upcoming family gathering. Cecilia adds that Briony include what she remembers of Danny Hardman, but Briony points out that Paul Marshall was the rapist and has just married Lola. They proceed to make passionate love in the library. Part 1, Chapter 1 Briony Tallis is a literary, self-important 13-year-old who lives in an English country estate in 1935. Paul Marshall, a visiting friend of Briony's older brother introduces himself to the visiting cousins and appears to be attracted to Lola. At first, Atonement looks to be a coming of age story combining social discrimination with sexual misinterpretation, where an adolescent girl makes a tragic mistake for which she must atone. The two girls talk, and Briony becomes convinced that Robbie was the assailant: a confused Lola does not dissent. Her 15-year-old, precocious cousin, Lola Quincey, schemes to take the leading role of Arabella away from Briony—an act that upsets Briony greatly. Briony misinterprets the scene as Robbie ordering her to undress and get in the water. Cecilia notes that now Lola will not be able to testify against her husband. Looking out of her bedroom window, she spies on her older sister, Cecilia, and the housekeeper's son, Robbie Turner, on whom Briony has a crush. Decades later, Briony is an elderly and successful novelist, giving an interview about her latest book, an autobiographical novel titled To re-create the Second World War setting, a historian was employed to work with the department heads. Robbie is able to reconnect with Cecilia before he is shipped off to France, and lives only to be able to head back to London to be with Cecilia and make up for the missing four years they could not spend together due to Briony's actions.
Briony agrees. During it, Briony sees Lola apparently being raped by a man, who flees upon being discovered.
Only afterwards does he realise he has given her the wrong letter. Briony misunderstands what has taken place between them and her reaction later tears the two lovers apart perhaps forever as war breaks out in Britain. The fourth was abandoned mid-flow due to the lighting becoming too bad for shooting.
Part One tells the story of one day/night in 1935 at the Tallis family estate north of London, England. "Atonement" begins on joyous gossamer wings, and descends into an abyss of tragedy and loss. Looking out of her bedroom window, she spies on her older sister, Cecilia, and the housekeeper's son, Robbie Turner, on whom Briony has a crush. Based on two incidents she saw between Cecilia and Robbie (one only from afar), on reading a private letter Robbie wrote to Cecilia, and on her own feelings for Robbie, Briony told some truths and half-truths about Robbie which resulted in this turn in his life. Before dinner, Robbie apologises to Cecilia for the obscene letter but, to his surprise, she confesses her secret love for him. They ended up using the third take. Robbie and Cecilia were just getting to the stage of their lives of being able to confess their true love for each other.
